Overview

As one of the longest gorges in Europe, the Samaria Gorge is a natural wonder worth seeing on Crete. Our team at True Cretan works with certified local guides who have extensive experience of the gorge’s terrain and know the area better than anyone. You will be accompanied by a passionate expert who will ensure a safe, insightful, and truly unforgettable hiking tour.

The Samaria Gorge has been a national park since 1962. The trail runs for 16 kilometres through a spectacular landscape with towering cliffs, ancient forests, freshwater springs and the famous Iron Gate, which is the narrowest point of the trail.

The 6-7 hour hike begins in Xyloskalo, the entrance to the gorge in the White Mountains, at an altitude of 1,200 metres. Along the way, you can spot native Kri-Kri goats, hear fascinating stories about the gorge’s historical role as a World War II refuge, and enjoy peaceful moments in a UNESCO-recognised biosphere reserve.

The trail ends in Agia Roumeli, a beautiful coastal village that can only be reached on foot or by boat. After your hike, you can relax, swim in the Libyan Sea, and enjoy a delicious Cretan meal before taking the ferry back to Chania.

This tour is one of the most popular things to do in Crete, for all the good reasons. It’s ideal for nature lovers, photography enthusiasts, and active travelers looking for one of the best experiences in Crete.

At True Cretan, the preservation of Crete’s natural treasures is very important to us. The Samaria Gorge is part of a protected national park, and all our tours follow the principles of Leave No Trace. Our guides ensure that the hikers will stay on the designated trails, respect the local flora and fauna, and dispose of their waste properly in the designated spots.

Group sizes are limited to reduce environmental impact and enhance the guest experience. Your safety is our top priority. Your guide is trained in first aid and equipped with emergency equipment. Due to the rocky, sloping terrain, suitable hiking footwear and physical fitness are required.
