Heraklion

Your Ultimate Guide to Crete’s Capital

About Heraklion

Heraklion is Crete’s capital and largest city, serving as the island’s economic, administrative, and often cultural hub. The city has always been a crossroads of trade and culture. This is reflected in its iconic monuments, from the Minoan Palace of Knossos to the Venetian Castle of Koules, anchoring the city’s identity and spirit.

Today, Heraklion is a modern, vibrant city that balances heritage preservation with contemporary needs. Recently, the city was introduced to many traffic-free zones and pedestrian-friendly streets, becoming more than ever an inviting, welcoming city for its thousands of visitors. The city’s tourism infrastructure includes many beachfront, family-friendly luxury resorts, supporting its role as a gateway to Crete’s heritage.

Where to Stay in Heraklion Accommodation

Heraklion offers diverse accommodation options catering to all preferences. Central boutique hotels provide elegant stays near historic landmarks like the Venetian Walls, featuring modern amenities and occasionally rooftop dining with harbor views. Beachfront resorts in coastal areas like Ammoudara and Hersonissos combine all-inclusive board with water parks and direct beach entry, making them ideal for families and water sports enthusiasts.

In the last few years, like everywhere in Greece, Heraklion has been home to thousands of Airbnb properties. The downside is that, most often, these don’t include breakfast. However, if centrally located, they offer the advantage of spacious housing, ideal for larger families. There are also amazing villas to choose from within easy reach of the city. Please let us know if you’re interested; we will be happy to help.

Transportation – Getting Around Heraklion

Heraklion’s transportation network offers efficient, affordable options for exploring the city and Crete’s wider attractions. Public buses (KTEL) are the backbone of local transit, with city buses (blue) operating free routes in central Heraklion and intercity buses (green) connecting Heraklion to other Cretan cities like Chania, Rethymno, and Agios Nikolaos. Taxis are easy to find and affordable. You will spot several taxi piazzas in the city center. Just enter the cab and give the driver your destination (tip: all taxi drivers are legally obligated to have a taxi meter visible to the passengers. Make sure yours is rolling and ask for your receipt once you pay).

Cultural Etiquette Embrace Local Customs

Cretans are known for their hospitality, or “philoxenia,” a deep-rooted tradition of welcoming visitors with warmth and generosity. When greeting locals, a handshake or a friendly “Yasou” (hello) is common.

Sharing food is central to Cretan culture. So, if offered a treat, it’s polite to accept. In tavernas and Heraklion restaurants, it’s customary to round off meals with raki, a local spirit. Dress modestly when visiting monasteries and churches, covering shoulders and knees. Loud voices or public arguments are frowned upon. During local festivals like Panigiria, embrace the music, dance, and community spirit. Respect traditions, and you’ll be welcomed like family!
