For travelers seeking authentic cultural experiences, sustainable shopping, and meaningful encounters with local communities, Xhobli is a destination that deserves a place on every Crete itinerary.

In the Heart of Kritsa Discovering Xhobli

Founded in 2022 as a Social Cooperative Enterprise of the Solidarity Economy, Xhobli takes its name from the Cretan dialect word meaning “plume” or “ornament”, a fitting symbol for a project dedicated to preserving beauty, craftsmanship, and cultural heritage.

The cooperative is housed inside a historic mansion in the center of Kritsa, one of Crete’s most beautiful and traditional villages. The space serves multiple purposes: a workshop, a traditional weaving school, an exhibition area, and a boutique showcasing handcrafted products made by the cooperative’s members. Most importantly, it is a place where the centuries-old art of Cretan weaving continues to thrive.

Preserving an Ancient Cretan Craft

Weaving has long been an essential part of Cretan culture, particularly in villages such as Kritsa, which has been famous for its textiles for generations. At Xhobli, the entire process of this traditional women’s art is taught and preserved: from preparing and setting up the loom to creating finished woven pieces by hand.

The cooperative’s mission is to safeguard and promote the intangible cultural heritage of Kritsa by teaching traditional weaving techniques to younger generations and sharing this knowledge with visitors from around the world.

School groups, interns, researchers, and curious travelers are warmly welcomed to experience the craft firsthand and learn about the cultural significance behind every thread.

The Most Authentic Souvenir from Crete

If you’re searching for a truly meaningful souvenir from Crete, it’s difficult to find something more authentic than a handcrafted piece from Xhobli.

The cooperative skillfully combines traditional weaving techniques with contemporary design, creating products that are both beautiful and practical. Their collection includes:

  • Handwoven handbags
  • Smartphone cases
  • Fashion accessories
  • Kitchen towels
  • Rugs and carpets
  • Home décor items

Each piece reflects the rich weaving heritage of Kritsa while embracing modern aesthetics and everyday functionality.

During our visit, Maria warmly welcomed us and guided us through the workshop and exhibition. Among the many unique creations, I couldn’t resist choosing a beautiful woven beach bag and a practical handwoven smartphone case, perfect companions for my Greek island adventures!

A Social Enterprise Creating Meaningful Impact Plan Your Visit

Beyond preserving traditional craftsmanship, Xhobli also demonstrates how cultural heritage can support social inclusion and community development.

The cooperative actively creates employment opportunities for women and supports individuals from socially vulnerable groups, including women with intellectual disabilities from nearby care institutions. Through meaningful work, skill development, and participation in the creative process, Xhobli helps foster inclusion, dignity, and empowerment.

This social mission is woven into every aspect of the cooperative’s work, making each purchase an investment not only in traditional craftsmanship but also in the local community.

Why Your Visit Matters Wrap Up

Whether you’re passionate about traditional crafts, responsible tourism, sustainable shopping, or simply discovering authentic local experiences, Xhobli offers something truly special.

In an age of mass-produced souvenirs, visiting Xhobli provides an opportunity to connect with the people behind the products, learn about a centuries-old art form, and support a community-driven initiative dedicated to preserving Crete’s cultural identity.

For us, it was one of the most inspiring stops in eastern Crete that we wholeheartedly recommend to anyone visiting the region.
