Paleochora, Crete: The Ultimate Guide

Relaxed Beaches, Cretan Food & Authentic South Coast Living

Tucked away on the remote southwestern coast of southern Chania, Paleochora is one of those rare places in Crete that feels both vibrant and wonderfully untouched.

She studied sociology and anthropology in Montreal and continued her graduate studies in the Netherlands. She has travelled extensively before returning to Heraklion in 2007 to deepen her professional and personal ties to the island. An ardent supporter of sustainable travel in Crete, Stella is passionate about its rich natural landscapes and traditions, and embraces innovation that breathes new life into Cretan cultural heritage!

Families, couples, hikers, campers, digital nomads, and long-time Crete lovers all seem to find their own version of paradise here.

Some come for the endless beaches. Others for the laid-back nightlife, hiking trails, or authentic tavernas serving slow-cooked Cretan dishes under tamarisk trees. And many simply come to slow down.

What makes Paleochora truly special is its balance: cosmopolitan without losing its soul, lively without becoming overwhelming, and deeply connected to nature while still offering everything you need for a comfortable holiday.

Why Paleochora Is One of Crete’s Most Beloved Destinations

Located at the very edge of southwest Crete, Paleochora sits on a narrow peninsula between two coastlines, giving visitors access to dramatically different beaches depending on the wind and weather conditions.

This is one of the reasons travelers return year after year: even on windy days, you can almost always find a calm bay for swimming.

The atmosphere here is wonderfully diverse. You can spend your vacation:

  • staying in a seaside hotel,
  • camping under juniper trees,
  • hiking the famous E4 trail,
  • enjoying romantic sunsets,
  • or simply moving between beach, taverna, and café at an unhurried pace.

Paleochora is not a destination for fast-paced sightseeing. It is relatively isolated, and road access to many other parts of Crete can take time. But that isolation is exactly what protects its authenticity. Rather than rushing from attraction to attraction, visitors settle into the rhythm of the south coast, which is the real luxury here afterall.

A Coastline for Every Mood: The Beaches of Paleochora

The coastline around Paleochora is exceptionally varied. Within a short distance, you will find organized sandy beaches, hidden coves, pebbled bays, and untouched stretches of coast.

Pachia Ammos: The Main Beach

The town’s central beach, Pachia Ammos, stretches for nearly a kilometer and is ideal for visitors who enjoy organized facilities, beach bars, water sports, sunbeds, and easy access to cafés and restaurants.

Gialiskari & Anydri

The twin pebble beaches of Gialiskari are among the area’s most beloved swimming spots, with crystal-clear waters and a peaceful atmosphere. Nearby, the sandy beach of Anydri offers another beautiful alternative for long summer swims.

Grammeno Beach

Last but not least, the beaches of Grammeno Beach are among the most photographed in southern Crete. Pale sand, shallow turquoise waters, and ancient juniper trees create an exotic landscape.

This is also our personal top choice as a family of four, as this is one of the best areas for families with young children thanks to the calm, shallow sea and relaxed atmosphere.

You can also visit the neighboring “Alonaki” beach, and explore the peninsula hosting a colony of protected junipers (please do not cut or break them!)

A must-visit here is the restaurant and bar at Camping Grammeno. Spending a full beach day here swimming, eating slowly, and watching the sunset, feels quintessentially Paleochora.

Krios & Hidden Coves

Further west, the more remote beaches of Krios reward visitors looking for quieter swimming spots and dramatic natural scenery. Along the road, countless unnamed coves invite spontaneous stops and exploration.

Where to Eat & Drink in Paleochora

Paleochora’s food scene perfectly reflects the character of the town itself: relaxed, authentic, and wonderfully eclectic.

The evenings revolve around the seaside promenade and the maze-like streets of the old town, where tavernas, rakadika, cafés, bars, and restaurants stay lively late into the night.

Some local favorites include:

  • To Peiratiko: a beloved choice for traditional Cretan cuisine and fresh local ingredients.
  • To Grammeno:  known for authentic regional dishes, popular to locals.
  • The Bar – Restaurant of the Camping Grammeno, beloved for its simple homemade food, casual setting, and family-friendly vibe.
  • Agios Bar: the heart of Paleochora’s nightlife and a classic stop for cocktails and drinks during the evening promenade.
  • Odysseia: popular for pizza and casual dinners.
  • To Liri Tis Papias: famous for crepes, raki, and occasional DJ nights.
  • Skala: a lovely breakfast spot beside the harbor.

Beyond the Beaches: Hiking, History & Boat Trips

While many visitors happily spend their days moving between beach and taverna, Paleochora also offers plenty for travelers who enjoy history, hiking, and exploration.

You can:

  • visit the Venetian fortress Castel Selino overlooking the town,
  • discover Byzantine chapels scattered across the countryside,
  • hike sections of the famous E4 European trail toward Sougia, Agia Roumeli, or Elafonisi,
  • explore the gorge of Kandanos,
  • or take ferries and boat trips along Crete’s spectacular south coast.

Because Paleochora is relatively isolated, many visitors choose not to spend their holiday driving long distances every day. Instead, one of the best ways to explore the region is by sea.

A sailing or boat excursion to Elafonisi Beach, arguably the most famous beach in Crete, is highly recommended. Seeing the rugged coastline from the water is an unforgettable experience in itself. Check out our all-inclusive catamaran cruise to Elafonisi and book now!

Spending time in Paleochora

A Beautiful Escape to Anydri

Just outside Paleochora, the road toward Anydri passes through a lush gorge and beautiful countryside before reaching the small mountain village.

Here you will find Kafeneio Sto Scholeio, one of the area’s most celebrated dining spots. Housed inside the village’s former school building, this atmospheric café-taverna serves traditional dishes alongside more creative seasonal recipes.

Under the shade of ancient trees overlooking the gorge and distant sea, visitors enjoy specialties such as wild greens pies, roasted snails, Chania-style boureki, slow-cooked goat, and inventive combinations like pork with plums and almonds.

Due to its popularity, reservations are strongly recommended during summer.

Stop in Historic Kandanos

About 15 kilometers before reaching Paleochora lies Kandanos, one of Crete’s most historically significant villages.

Destroyed by German forces during World War II in retaliation for local resistance, Kandanos today preserves memorials and inscriptions commemorating those tragic events.

But the village is also known for something sweeter: the legendary pastries of Kontekakis Pastry Shop. Their galaktoboureko, handmade ice cream, and traditional desserts are famous across the region.

The village square is also an excellent place to enjoy authentic local tavernas away from the summer crowds of Paleochora.

Is Paleochora Right for You?

Paleochora is ideal for travelers seeking:

  • authentic Crete rather than mass tourism,
  • exceptional beaches,
  • slow travel,
  • hiking and nature,
  • family-friendly holidays,
  • relaxed nightlife,
  • and excellent traditional food.

Expert tips:

  • If you are driving to Paleochora, you need to take the road that passes through the village of Kandanos. Sometimes Google maps suggests an alternative route as faster, but actually it is harder to drive on.
  • Do not attempt to walk on the E4 trail without an expert guide, as in some parts signs are not visible and it can be easy – and dangerous! – to get lost.
  • Paleochora is the perfect base for memorable boat trips to some of Crete’s most striking landscape and beaches. Contact us for more details!
